I test drove one of those abysmal Ford 1/2 tons and I couldn’t believe how archaic it’s ride quality was. I knew from the first bump we went over that the ride quality would never allow me to drink my daily latte ever again for fear of spilling it on my slacks. Also, the seats didn’t make me feel like I was sitting in a lazy boy at home relaxing while watching my favorite episode of Modern Family.. so I had to try something else.
Thanks Honda for the Ridgeline, now I can have the same ride quality as my wife’s new minivan but look “rugged” when I drop the kids off at school. I will even back it into the last row of parking spots at Panera Bread like all the other guys since I own a truck. Now to check to make sure I can fit my dirty walking shoes in the bed!!!!
- My Point -
Everyone says things like how every person that owns a truck (besides contractors) should own a Ridgeline becasue it’s the only possible way to own a truck to daily drive without ending your life. Look, I get it, you like cars. But all the cubbies and bed trunks won’t make a guy that likes a regular truck and doesn’t give two shits about spilling his latte change to a Ridgeline. The new 1/2 trucks are amazing. They ride great, they have lots of abilities and they will never leave the owner wanting more. It’s going to take more than a riding like a minivan to get guys to switch.

Everyone says it. They say oh you should buy a Ridgeline becasue the other 1/2 ton trucks are unberable to daily.
I don’t know how that is possible.

I’ve never been under the impression that minivan seats were more comfortable than pickup seats.

I would like a Ridgeline because my parents have a Silverado and it’s 100 years old technology-wise, and my FIL has a ‘14 F150 FX4 and it has leather-covered park benches for seats and Fisher Price stamps on the plastic interior bits. I like my Pilot, but would like it more if it had a 5' bed. Hence, Ridgeline.

Me either. But just read some non truck guy comments about how truly “aweful” trucks seats or ride is.

Well... I daily a midsize (compact. It’s a compact. Compare to the old S10's. COMPACT) pickup, the ride is comparitively horrendous because there’s not as much weight to dampen the motion as there is on a fullsize. Spilled drinks thus far: 1, due to a dozy passenger putting one down on the dash rather than a cupholder.
So, yeah, um... I know the Ridgeline will ride better, but law of diminishing returns etc etc. How long before we play “Princess and the pea” with ride quality I wonder...

For sure. But even the new 1/2 tons are more honest than this truck.

No question. But it seems like the big promtion is that this has the best ride quality of any truck. For most truck buyers this will never compare to the things you loose. It just seems like they are just selling to the latte drinkers of the truck world.

I just finished my latte, riding around in the Taco. Did not spill. Also 2 seats, 6 cupholders. Or as I call them, cliff-bar-wrappers-compartments.

Seems to me that most modern trucks I’ve driven have a “car like” ride quality. Compared to my 1990 isuzu, or a 90's toyota, or the the 3/4 ton 1965 Ford I learned to drive in. Once you get a modern truck out on the open road, having a 6.6L v8 turbo diesel at your disposal is pretty much the best thing ever.

Did you comparo it against a new Taco? I thought about waiting to get a Ridgeline but opted for the Taco instead.

Bias aside, I think I can make a case for this little guy.
Less equipment than a cave. Doesn’t ride very well. It’s just a tool for moving stuff from place to place.

You know, I like that truck. I used to have an ‘08 Ram 1500 with the HEMMEHH in it, and although that had more cargo room, I will agree with the ride quality. For actually using the truck as a truck (landscaping, heavy hauling) I would rather have the Ram, but this is a solid Caruck.

How long until we have trucks, and then oversized cars with beds? I think we are most of the way there.

The thing about the Ridgelines is that they are great for what they are, which is a Pilot with a bed instead of a hatch. They have everything that makes a Pilot great, with the addition of the usefulness of a truck bed, and without the usefulness of an enclosed hatch.
They will sell to previous Ridgeline owners, and current owners of Honda cars / SUVs that want a truck that is also a Honda. There will be very few people trading fullsize trucks in on one. Slightly more than very few people will trade in a midsize truck on one.
I’m sure they work great towing a small (1k - 2k lbs) trailer. Same goes for driving in light snow, or on a well maintained gravel road, or carrying a box or two of Ikea furniture. A fullsize truck will do better at truck things, the Ridgeline will do better when driving around empty.

Sure. But there’s two reasons I came out that way:
It’s a MUCH MALIGNED truck.
I happen to have one, albeit a top trim version (which still has cave equipment levels).

I daily a unibody truck. It doesn’t drive or ride like a minivan. Two solid axles means it rides like a truck. I’m grateful for that. I had to drive a Venture the other day and it was more terrible than I remember. [audible shudder].

I think Honda has to make the truck look muscular and not like a CRV on steroids to sell trucks. And not macho like the old truck either. That just looked off to me.

The last truck was a try hard I thought. But much more fitting of a design compared to the new CR-V/Pilot.

Speaking for myself only, I detest how the last gen of Ridgeline rides. It drives like a lifted minivan with all the weight in the wrong places, with stiffened suspension to keep the horrible sway in check... which is more or less what it actually is. I’d rather be in a littler bouncy truck, because then I can develop an intuitive feel of what it’s doing rather than trying to find the sweet spot where all the managed feedbacks cancel out.
